The Two Wind Seasons
Koh Samui gets wind from two monsoons, and each one reaches a different coast. Kite Club Koh Samui follows them — the whole school, including rental, storage and lessons, moves between two beaches:
- Lamai season: December–April at Lamai Beach on the east coast. NE monsoon (Dec–Mar), turning more easterly in April. Typically 12–20 knots, most consistent and strongest January–March. Our main season.
- Nathon season: May–October at Nathon Beach on the west coast. SW monsoon, typically 10–18 knots, more variable than the Lamai season; afternoons usually best.
- Transition: October–November — lighter, variable wind. Koh Samui's rainy season is roughly October–December, with November usually the wettest month.
- No-wind days: e-foil, kayak and SUP run from the same beach.

Lamai Season Deep Dive (December–April)
What Drives It
In the dry months the northeast monsoon blows across the Gulf of Thailand onto Koh Samui's east coast. Lamai Beach — a long sandy beach of about 4 km, with Hin Ta & Hin Yai at its southern end — faces straight into it, which is why it is our main-season spot.
December: The Start
The NE monsoon sets in on the east coast in December and the school moves back to Lamai. The end of the rainy season can overlap with the start of the wind, so keep a flexible schedule.
January–March: The Most Consistent Period
January to March is the heart of the season, with the most consistent and strongest wind of the year — typically 12–20 knots. This is the best time for a full beginner or independent course and the most popular time to visit, so book ahead.
If you can only come once for a dedicated kite trip, choose January–March at Lamai and stay at least 7–10 days so a light-wind day or two does not cut into your course.
April: Late Season
In April the wind turns more easterly and the season winds down. There are still good days, but it is less predictable than January–March — a good month if you are flexible or combining kiting with other activities.
Nathon Season Deep Dive (May–October)
When the southwest monsoon takes over, the east coast goes quiet and the wind shifts to the west coast. From May to October the school runs at Nathon Beach, next to Nathon town and the main ferry pier.
What to Expect
Typical wind is 10–18 knots — more variable than the Lamai season, with afternoons usually the best window. Riders with some experience, wing foilers (who can ride in lighter wind) and beginners with a flexible schedule get the most out of this season.
Nathon is about 40 minutes by car from Samui Airport and 30–40 minutes from Lamai. If you are coming for the Nathon season, staying on the west coast saves a lot of driving.
Transition: October–November
Between the two monsoons the wind is lighter and variable. This is also Koh Samui's rainy season — roughly October to December, with November usually the wettest month — which is the opposite of most of Thailand.
What is available in the transition:
- Kite and wing: when the wind allows — message us for current conditions.
- E-foil: no wind needed.
- Kayak and SUP: on calm days.
- Island exploration: Big Buddha, Na Muang waterfalls, Fisherman's Village, Ang Thong Marine Park trips when the weather allows.
Do not plan a dedicated kite trip for October–November. Plan an island holiday and add water sports when conditions are right.

Rain vs Wind: What to Expect
Koh Samui's weather pattern is different from most of Thailand: the main rainy season is roughly October to December, with November usually the wettest month. The Lamai season (from January) and the Nathon season (May–October) are generally drier, with tropical showers that usually pass quickly.
