First-Flight Guide

E-Foil

You stand on a board, squeeze a trigger and, a few seconds later, the hull lifts clear of the sea and goes quiet. That moment is what people come for. Here is how a first e-foil session with Kite Club on Koh Samui works: where it happens in each season, how the hour is spent and which option to book.

A Board That Makes Its Own Wind

Every other board sport we teach needs something from nature: a breeze for the kite or wing, a swell for surfing. An e-foil brings its own power. Under the board sits a mast with a small propeller and a wing-shaped foil. Once you have enough speed, that underwater wing produces lift and the whole board rises above the surface, so only the mast and foil stay in the water.

You control everything with a wireless trigger in one hand. Squeeze more and you go faster and higher; ease off and the board settles back down.

How the First Hour Actually Goes

Nobody starts standing. The session follows the same steps whatever your age or background:

  • On the sand — your instructor explains the remote, the safety cut-off and how to fall away from the board, then you put on the impact vest.
  • Lying down — you ride flat on your belly at low speed to feel how the board reacts to the trigger.
  • Kneeling — still on the water, you move to your knees and learn where to put your weight.
  • Standing — you get up with the board still touching the water, keeping speed low and steady.
  • Lift-off — a little more trigger and a slight shift of weight to the back foot, and the board starts to fly. Short flights come first; longer ones follow with practice.

Our Advice

Thirty minutes goes quickly once you include the briefing and the lying-down stage. If you only book one session, take the 60-minute lesson: that second half hour is usually when the board first leaves the water.

Lamai or Nathon: Where You Ride Depends on the Month

Kite Club moves with the monsoons, and e-foil moves with us. From December to April sessions run at Lamai Beach on the east coast, the easiest base if you are staying in Lamai itself or in Chaweng to the north. From May to October we switch to Nathon on the west coast, beside the town and the ferry pier, which suits guests staying in Nathon, Maenam or Bophut.

Because an e-foil does not need wind, calm days are actually the best days. Mornings are generally the flattest time of day, especially in the windier Lamai season when afternoon breeze can bring chop. The transition months of October and November, with light and variable wind, are a good time to e-foil when kiting is harder to plan.

Island Logistics

Samui is bigger than it looks on a map, and traffic around Chaweng can be slow. If you are staying on the other side of the island from the current spot, book a morning slot and allow a relaxed drive rather than squeezing it between other plans.

Before You Arrive

Bring swimwear, a rash vest or long-sleeve top for sun protection, sunscreen and a bottle of water. We provide the board, the impact vest and the helmet. If you want to take a memory home, ask for the drone video option when booking: 1,000 THB for the raw footage or 2,000 THB edited.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I actually fly above the water?+

It varies with balance and confidence. Many people get a short lift during their first 60-minute lesson, while others spend that hour getting comfortable standing up. Holding a steady height usually comes over the next few sessions, which is why repeat lessons and packages exist.

I have never surfed or kited. Is that a problem?+

Not at all. The motor and hand remote do the work that wind or waves do in other board sports, so beginners with no background can start straight away. You should be comfortable in the water and at least 12 years old.

Which beach will my session be at?+

It depends on the month. From December to April we ride at Lamai on the east coast, and from May to October at Nathon on the west coast, next to the town and ferry pier. We confirm the meeting point on WhatsApp when you book.

Can I get a video of my ride?+

Yes. A drone video can be added for 1,000 THB, or 2,000 THB with editing. Let us know when booking so the drone is ready for your session.

What happens if the sea is too rough on my day?+

Your instructor decides on the beach. If chop or weather makes the session unsafe or unpleasant, we move it to another slot, often an earlier morning when the water is usually flatter.
