No wind, no experience, no problem: how e-foil lessons work on Koh Samui, which session to book, what the first half hour feels like, prices, age limits and where we ride in each season.

Flying Without Wind
An e-foil is a board with a small electric motor and propeller mounted on a hydrofoil under it. You control the speed with a wireless hand remote. At low speed it behaves like a slightly wobbly surfboard; once you go a little faster, the underwater wing starts to lift and the whole board rises above the surface. From that moment the noise of the hull on the water disappears and you glide.
Because the power comes from a battery rather than the sky, e-foiling does not care about the monsoon. That makes it the natural answer to the question every wind-sport visitor eventually asks on Koh Samui: what do we do on the calm days? It is also the quickest way for complete beginners to feel what foiling is like — the feeling kiters and wingers spend many hours working towards.

Which Option Should You Book?
Just curious? Take the 30-minute Intro. It is enough to learn the basics, feel the board lift and decide whether you want more.
Want to actually learn it? Book the 60-minute Lesson. A full hour gives you time to settle in, fall a few times, understand why, and then string together longer flights. Once you have had your first lesson, further hours cost 3,000 THB.
Staying a week? The 5 × 30 min package spreads short sessions over several days. Short, frequent practice suits foiling well, because your balance improves between sessions as much as during them.
Planning to ride independently? The Freedom package gives you 5 hours in total — enough to work on turns, speed control and longer runs until the board feels like yours.
Your First Half Hour, Minute by Minute
On the beach. The instructor shows you the board, the remote and the safety rules: how to stop the motor, how to fall away from the foil, and where you are allowed to ride.
Lying down. You start prone on the board at low speed, feeling how the remote responds and where the board likes your weight to be.
Kneeling. Next you come up onto your knees, still at gentle speed. This is where most people discover that tiny movements matter.
Standing. When you are steady on your knees, you stand up with your feet roughly shoulder-width apart and your weight centred.
First lift. A little more speed, and the board starts to rise. Most people lean back by instinct and splash down — that is completely normal. The instructor tells you what to change, and the next attempt is always better.
Instructor tip
Think of the remote as a dimmer, not a switch. Smooth, small speed changes keep the board level; sudden bursts make the nose shoot up. And look ahead at the horizon, not down at the board — your balance follows your eyes.
After the First Session
Once you can take off, the second hour is about control. You learn to hold the board at a steady height instead of bouncing up and down, to make gentle turns by shifting your weight and looking where you want to go, and to slow down and come off the foil gracefully instead of falling.
With more time on the water the board starts to feel natural. You can ride longer lines, link turns and vary your speed, and you spend less energy fighting the board. That is when e-foiling becomes relaxing rather than exciting — and many riders like that stage best.
How fast you get there varies a lot. Balance, confidence, body weight and even the state of the water on the day all play a part, so we do not promise a number of minutes to your first flight. What we see again and again is that people who take several shorter sessions on different days progress more comfortably than those who try to cram everything into one long, tiring session — which is exactly why the 5 × 30 min package exists.
Want to remember it? The drone add-on films you from above, which is the only angle that really shows the board flying clear of the water. Many guests find that the video also helps them see what the instructor has been telling them about their stance.
Where and When on Koh Samui
Like all our services, e-foil moves with the season: Lamai Beach on the east coast from December to April and Nathon Beach on the west coast, next to the town and the ferry pier, from May to October.
The best e-foil water is calm and smooth, so early mornings are often ideal, before any wind picks up. The windier afternoons of the Lamai season (January to March in particular) belong to the kiters and wingers, while e-foil fills the gaps on quieter days.
E-foil really shines in October and November, the transition months with light and variable wind. If your holiday falls then, you may find e-foil gives you more water time than any wind sport.
Local insight
In the Lamai season and staying in Chaweng, Bophut or Maenam? Book an early slot and have breakfast afterwards in Lamai. You get the smoothest water and the rest of the day free for the island.
Who Can Try It
You do not need any board-sport background. You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. The minimum age is 12, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's consent. Surfers and snowboarders often find the balance familiar, but plenty of our e-foil students have never stood on a board before.
E-foiling is less physically demanding than kitesurfing or wing foiling, because there is no wind pulling on you. It still works your legs and core, and after an hour of concentrating on balance most people are happily tired.
If you have back, knee or shoulder problems, or you are pregnant, talk to us before booking. The instructor can suggest whether to start on your knees for longer, keep the speed lower or skip it this time, and we would always rather have that conversation on WhatsApp than on the beach.
Safety on the E-Foil
- An instructor supervises every session and stays close to you, especially during the first attempts.
- You wear a helmet and a vest. Falls happen and are usually harmless, but the board is hard and the foil has edges.
- The motor stops as soon as you release the remote, so it never keeps pushing a rider who has fallen.
- You learn to fall away from the board and to keep the foil at a distance while you climb back on.
- Sessions take place in a session area away from swimmers, chosen for calm conditions on the day.
Five Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes
- Too much speed too early. The board lifts before you are ready, and a fast fall is less fun than a slow one. Build speed step by step.
- Leaning back. When the nose rises, the instinct is to sit back. Instead, move a little weight onto the front foot.
- Stiff legs. Straight, locked knees turn every ripple into a wobble. Soft knees absorb it.
- Staring at your feet. Look at the horizon or at a point on the shore; your body steers where your eyes go.
- Giving up after a fall. Every splash tells you something. Most people improve noticeably within a few attempts once they know what caused the last one.

Is It Worth the Money?
Minute for minute, e-foil is the most expensive thing we offer, and we would rather you know that before booking. What you pay for is the equipment — a battery-powered foil board is a costly piece of kit — and one-to-one attention from an instructor.
In return, you get something that is hard to find elsewhere on a beach holiday: a genuinely new sensation, reached quickly, with no dependency on the weather. For many of our guests the 30-minute Intro is the highlight of the trip. Others use it as a stepping stone to wing foiling. If you are unsure, start with the Intro; you can always book a full lesson afterwards.
E-Foil Alongside Your Wind Lessons
If you came to Samui to learn kitesurfing or wing foiling, an e-foil session is a useful extra rather than a distraction. It lets you experience riding on a foil in simple conditions, without having to manage a kite or a wing at the same time. Wing students in particular often find that their first foil flights on the wing feel less strange after an hour on an e-foil.
It also protects your holiday from bad luck. A calm day in the middle of a kite course does not have to be a lost day on the water. And for families or friends who do not want to learn a wind sport, e-foil is an easy way to join the fun at the beach.
