Good riders make kite control look effortless because their inputs are small and calm. Almost every problem beginners have — too much power, crashes, being pulled off balance — comes from moving the bar too much or at the wrong moment.

Understand the Wind Window
- Neutral zone — the edge of the window, left and right: little power, a safe place to park the kite.
- Zenith — directly overhead at 12 o'clock: low power, but pulls you up rather than forward.
- Power zone — in front of you, downwind: the most pull. Beginners keep the kite out of it except when they need power.
Steer With Small Inputs
Pull gently on the left side of the bar and the kite goes left; right and it goes right. The kite keeps turning as long as the bar is tilted, so steer, then level the bar. Think of it like a bicycle handlebar, not a steering wheel.
Sheeting: Power On and Off
Pulling the bar towards you (sheeting in) adds power; pushing it away (sheeting out) reduces power. Letting go of the bar completely drops most of the power — the first safety reflex you learn.
Flying With One Hand
Hold the bar in the middle with one hand and steer with small wrist movements. You need this to carry the board, recover it after a fall and adjust your harness.
Know the Safety Systems
- Let go of the bar to depower.
- Quick release on the chicken loop to disconnect from the harness.
- Safety leash release as the last resort.
Watch the kite less and feel it more. After the first lesson, try to fly by the pull in your hands and only glance up to check.
Learning Kite Control on Koh Samui
The first part of every course at Kite Club is kite control on the beach and in shallow water, then body dragging. Our instructors coach through radio helmets, so corrections reach you while the kite is in the air. Start with the first kitesurfing lesson — 5,000 THB, 2 hours private or 3 hours in a group.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you steer a kite?
Pull gently on one side of the bar to turn the kite that way, then level the bar to stop the turn.
How do I reduce kite power quickly?
Push the bar away (sheet out) or let go of it completely. The kite depowers by itself.
Where should the kite be for a beginner?
Mostly at the edge of the wind window or near 12 o'clock, away from the power zone in front of you.
Is kite control taught before riding?
Yes. Every Kite Club course starts with kite control and safety systems before the board.
