Lesson fees are the one part of a Samui kite trip you can know exactly before you leave home. These are the current prices at Kite Club Koh Samui for the kitesurfing courses and for the water activities most students add on calm days. All kitesurfing equipment is included in the course price.

Four Realistic Lesson Budgets
Most visitors fall into one of a few patterns. Here is what the lesson side of the trip costs in each case, using only the prices above.

The biggest hidden cost of a kite course is not money, it is days. A course needs wind, and wind occasionally takes a day off. Leaving a couple of spare days in your Samui stay costs far less than rebooking flights because the course did not fit.
Private vs Group: Same Price, Different Hours
Each course costs the same whether you take it privately or in a group, but the number of hours changes. Private means one student per instructor; group means two students share one instructor and the sessions are longer.

On paper the group format gives you more time for the money. In practice, private lessons give you undivided attention, and some students progress just as far in the shorter sessions. Choose by how you learn, not only by the hourly figure.
What the Course Fee Covers
- Equipment — kite, bar and lines, board, harness, helmet and impact vest for every lesson.
- Instruction — an IKO-certified instructor, one-to-one or with a maximum of two students.
- Certification — your IKO level is recorded as you progress.
- Planning help — we keep an eye on the forecast and move lessons to the best wind windows.
Not included: flights, accommodation, transport to the beach, meals, travel insurance and anything you rent after the course. Those are the variables, and they depend almost entirely on the kind of holiday you like.
Island Costs That Shape Your Total
Getting to Samui
Samui has its own airport (USM), and flying straight in is the quickest way to arrive. It is usually not the cheapest. Many budget travellers instead fly or take the train to Surat Thani on the mainland, then a bus and ferry to Nathon on the west coast. It takes longer but often costs less, and in the May–October season it drops you right next to the kite beach.
Where you sleep
Accommodation is the largest variable. Chaweng has the widest range, from hostels to big resorts, and tends to be busier. Lamai is a little quieter and puts you close to the school from December to April. Bophut and Fisherman's Village lean towards boutique hotels. Maenam and Nathon are generally calmer and simpler. Being near the active kite beach saves both taxi fares and time every lesson day.
Getting around
Taxis and songthaews run around the ring road, and ride-hailing apps are available. Many visitors rent a scooter, but only do it if you are licensed and your travel insurance covers it; the island's hilly roads are no place to learn.
Food
Eating at local restaurants and night markets keeps daily costs low; beachfront restaurants and resort dining cost noticeably more. After a lesson you will be hungry, so plan for it.
How the Season Affects Spending
January to March is the peak of the Lamai season, with the steadiest north-east wind of the year. It is also a popular time to visit Samui in general, so hotels near Lamai fill up and prices reflect that. Booking accommodation early matters more than booking lessons early.
From May to October the school works at Nathon on the west coast. The wind is more variable, but this part of the island is generally less crowded, which can make the rest of the trip easier on the wallet. October and November bring light wind and rain; they are better months for the e-foil, SUP and kayak than for a kite course.
Other Wind Sports and What They Cost
Some people discover during a Discovery lesson that kiting is not quite their thing, or they want to try something new on a second trip. Kite Club also teaches wing foiling and windsurfing, both certified and both run from the same beaches as the kite lessons.

Wing foiling suits riders who like the idea of holding the wing in their hands rather than flying a kite on long lines. Windsurfing is a good option for anyone who has sailed before or wants a sport with a very visible, hands-on connection to the wind. Each has its own learning curve, so ask us which one fits your goals and the wind forecast for your dates.
After the Course: Rental and Storage

If you are wondering whether to buy gear, wait until you have ridden independently for a while. Your preferred kite size, board style and harness fit become clear only after some time on the water.

The Discovery lesson at 5,000 THB. It is 2 hours private or 3 hours in a group, includes all equipment, and shows you whether you want to continue.
The Full Beginner course (14,000 THB) followed by the Independent course (20,000 THB) comes to 29,000 THB in lesson fees, with all equipment included.
The price per course is the same. Group lessons give you more hours (for example 9 hours instead of 6 on the Full Beginner course) because two students share one instructor.
It is the fastest option. The mainland route via Surat Thani and the ferry to Nathon is slower but often cheaper, especially if you are learning at Nathon between May and October.

Two lines deserve extra attention. Insurance is easy to overlook, but many standard policies treat kitesurfing as a specialist activity, so read the small print before you travel. The buffer line is the one that protects everything else: a trip with a little slack in it rarely ends with unused lessons.
Budget Tip
Check which beach is active for your dates before booking a hotel. From December to April that means Lamai; from May to October it means Nathon. Staying on the wrong side of the island turns every lesson into a cross-island taxi ride.
Money Habits That Stretch a Samui Budget
Small choices add up over a week or two. Eat where local people eat: a short walk back from the beachfront usually means simpler menus and lower prices. Carry a refillable water bottle, because you will drink a lot after hours in the sun. Use a bank card with low foreign transaction fees and withdraw larger amounts less often, rather than paying a machine fee every day. Buy sunscreen and basic pharmacy items on the island if they are cheaper than at home, but bring a strong reef-friendly sunscreen if you have a brand you trust.
Think about your lesson format with the same care. If you learn well by watching and are travelling with a partner or friend, the group format gives you more hours for the same course price. If you get tired quickly in the heat, or want every minute of feedback, private lessons are usually the better value even though the hours are shorter. Either way, the equipment is included, so you do not need to buy or rent anything before your course.
Travelling as a couple or a family where only one person kites? Samui makes that easy. Lamai and Chaweng have plenty to do on the beach and in town, Fisherman's Village in Bophut is pleasant for an evening walk, and non-kiting partners can join on the water with a SUP or kayak for a fraction of a lesson price. That way the kite course does not have to dictate the whole holiday budget, and nobody spends the day waiting on the sand.
Finally, remember that a windless day is not wasted money. Your lesson is moved, not lost, and a morning on a SUP or kayak or a first go on the e-foil keeps the holiday moving while the wind comes back.
