Arriving on an island alone with a plan to learn kitesurfing can feel like a lot. In practice, a kite school solves most of the solo-travel problems for you: it gives your days a structure, puts you on a beach with people who share the same goal, and takes care of the safety side while you learn. Here is how to plan it on Samui.

Landing Alone: The First 24 Hours
Most solo riders fly into Samui airport (USM), which sits in the north-east corner of the island. From there it is a taxi or pre-booked transfer to your base. Which base depends on the month: from December to April we teach at Lamai Beach on the east coast, and from May to October at Nathon Beach on the west coast, next to the town and ferry pier.
Message us on WhatsApp before you travel and we will tell you where to find us. Starting the course the day after you land, rather than on arrival day, gives you a fresh head for the first lesson.
Private or Group When You Are on Your Own
Travelling alone does not mean you have to learn alone. Our group format is two students per instructor, and pairing solo guests with another beginner is something we do all the time. You get more hours for the same price and a ready-made riding partner.

Private lessons make sense if your dates are fixed and short, or if you prefer the instructor's full attention. If you are flexible, the group option is great value and the social side is a real bonus when you have arrived with nobody.
Wind decides the schedule, not the calendar. A solo trip is easy to extend, so book the first few nights and keep the rest flexible. If a day is flat, you have lost nothing: rest, explore, and ride the next day.
Choosing a Base as a Solo Traveller
- Lamai (December–April) — the obvious choice in the main season. Guesthouses, bungalows and small hotels are within walking distance of the beach, and the village has plenty of places to eat alone without feeling out of place.
- Nathon (May–October) — a real working town rather than a resort strip. It is quieter in the evenings but practical: markets, cafés and the ferry pier on your doorstep.
- Chaweng or Bophut — livelier, with more nightlife and the Fisherman's Village in Bophut, but you will be commuting to the spot every morning. Fine for a week of sightseeing, less ideal for a course.
Staying Safe Without a Travel Buddy
- Ride where people are — the golden rule: never kite with nobody else on the water or beach who could help.
- Tell someone your plan — a quick message to the school or your guesthouse before you head out costs nothing.
- Know your limit — gusty or offshore days are not the days to test yourself. Ask the instructors if you are unsure.
Meeting People Through the Sport
A kite beach is one of the easiest places in the world to start a conversation. Everyone is watching the same sky and talking about the same wind. Students on the same course often end up eating together and sharing rides to the spot.
Samui is a short ferry ride from our sister school, Kite Club Koh Phangan. If you have time, a few days on each island is an easy way to add variety to a solo trip.

Yes. Group lessons are two students with one instructor, and we can pair you with another beginner at a similar level. Group courses are longer than private ones for the same price, for example 9 hours instead of 6 on the Full Beginner course.
For learning, December to April at Lamai is the most reliable, with the steadiest wind from January to March. May to October at Nathon works too, but the wind is more variable, so allow extra days.
Samui airport (USM) is in the north-east of the island. Taxis and pre-booked transfers run from there to Lamai and to Nathon; ask your accommodation to arrange a pickup if you land late.
Never ride with nobody else around, and never in conditions beyond your level. Tell someone when you go out, check the forecast, and ask the school about the day before launching. During the course and afterwards, riding when the club is on the beach is the safest option.
