February is the heart of the kite season on Koh Samui. The NE monsoon is well established at Lamai Beach on the east coast, and January to March is typically the most consistent and strongest period of the year — usually 12–20 knots. It is also one of the drier months on the island.

Why February Is Outstanding for Beginners
The typical February range of 12–20 knots covers the sweet spot for beginner learning. Strong enough to generate reliable kite pull and consistent body drag. Gentle enough that the kite feels manageable. Students learning in moderate, steady wind develop technique faster than those learning in strong, gusty conditions where survival instincts override skill-building.
February sits in the middle of the most consistent part of the Lamai season (January–March). No month is guaranteed, but planning a 10-day beginner course in February gives you a very good chance of enough wind days to complete the full progression — and on lighter days you can switch to e-foil, kayak or SUP.
February vs March vs April
- February — Core of the NE monsoon at Lamai, typically 12–20 kts, one of the drier months. Great for beginners and all levels.
- March — Still part of the most consistent period (January–March), often with some of the stronger days of the season. Great for progressing riders.
- April — Last month of the Lamai season. Wind turns more easterly and can be less consistent; hot and sunny. Good for all levels, with a few buffer days.
If your dates are fixed and you want the best odds of steady wind at Lamai, aim for January–March. February is right in the middle of that window. There are no guarantees with wind — so build one or two buffer days into your plan.
