January on Koh Samui is the start of the most consistent part of the kite season. The NE monsoon is established at Lamai Beach on the east coast, and January to March is typically the steadiest, strongest period of the year — usually 12–20 knots. Early January can still bring a few showers as the rainy season fades.

Who Should Come in January
January suits almost everyone: beginners who want a steady learning wind, returning riders who want regular sessions, and visitors who want to combine kiting with the rest of Koh Samui — Lamai village, Chaweng, Fisherman's Village in Bophut or a day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park.
As with any wind destination, there will be lighter days. On those days the school runs e-foil, kayak and SUP sessions, or uses the time for theory and kite control on the beach. Building one or two buffer days into your trip is always a good idea.
Early, Mid, and Late January
- Early January (1–10) — The last showers of the rainy season can still pass through. Wind is usually establishing well, with some lighter days.
- Mid January (11–20) — NE monsoon well established. Typically 12–20 knots at Lamai; sessions become more predictable.
- Late January (21–31) — Usually drier and steadier, leading into February and March, the core of the Lamai season.
If you can choose, a trip from mid-January into February gives you the best chance of steady NE wind at Lamai. If you are coming for the New Year period, book lessons early and allow a few buffer days.
January Advantages
January is a popular month on Koh Samui, especially around New Year, so book accommodation in Lamai early. Lamai has options for every budget, and the school is right on the beach, so you can walk to lessons from many places in the village.
January is one of our favourite months for new students: the wind is usually steady, the water is warm (27–30 °C) and there is enough time left in the season to continue into February and March if you catch the bug.
