Stand-up paddle is the quickest water sport to learn — most people are standing within a few minutes. On Samui it is also the perfect plan B for a day without wind. Here is where to paddle, what it costs and the three things that make your first session easy.

Where to Paddle
Our SUP boards are at the kite base, which moves with the monsoon:
- December – April: Nahai Beach — shallow, flat water with no waves along a quiet 2 km beach near Hua Thanon. Ideal for beginners and kids.
- May – October: Nathon Beach — the west coast next to Nathon town. Mornings are usually glassy; evenings bring sunset views over the water.

Your First Session in Three Steps
- Start on your knees. Paddle a few strokes kneeling in the middle of the board to feel how stable it is.
- Stand up in one move. Feet where your knees were, hip-width apart, knees soft, eyes on the horizon — not on your feet.
- Paddle with your body. Blade fully in the water, pull with your core and back rather than your arms, switch sides every few strokes to go straight.
Set the paddle length to roughly your height plus a hand. A paddle that is too long tires your shoulders in ten minutes.
When the Water Is Best
Mornings are calmest on both coasts. On kite days the wind usually builds through the late morning, and paddling back upwind on a SUP is hard work — so plan to go out early or keep close to the beach. From October to December showers can arrive quickly; if the sky darkens, head in.
Kitesurfers love SUP on rest days: it trains exactly the balance and core strength you need for water starts and riding a board.
SUP for Families
Boards are wide and stable. Younger children can sit on the front while a parent paddles; older kids quickly paddle on their own in the shallow water at Nahai. Want something calmer still? Try a double kayak.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is SUP rental on Koh Samui?
At Kite Club: 400 THB for 1 hour, 700 THB for 2 hours and 1,000 THB for the whole day, with board, paddle and leash included.
Do I need a lesson?
No. We give you a short briefing on the beach. Most beginners are standing and paddling within a few minutes.
What if I fall in?
You will — everyone does. The leash keeps the board next to you; climb back on from the side at the middle of the board.
Is SUP possible on windy days?
Only close to the beach. Strong wind makes paddling back hard. Mornings are usually the calmest time.
