The Samui Water Calendar at a Glance

Everything on Samui follows the monsoon, and so do we. From December to April the school works from Lamai Beach on the east coast, where the northeast monsoon typically blows 12–20 knots, most steadily from January to March. From May to October we move to Nathon Beach on the west coast, beside Nathon town and the ferry pier; the southwest monsoon there is lighter and more variable, typically 10–18 knots, and usually best in the afternoon.

October and November sit in between: light, changeable wind and the start of the rainy season. That is when the no-wind activities — e-foil, kayak and SUP — really earn their place. In practice this means there is something to do on the water in every month; only the mix changes.

Kitesurfing: The Headline Act

A kite on long lines pulls you across the water on a board, and once it clicks it is hard to think about anything else. It is also the sport that needs the most careful teaching, so every lesson is taught by an IKO Level 3 instructor, with a radio helmet so you get clear coaching while you ride. You can learn privately or in a group of two students with one instructor.

  • Discovery — 5,000 THB: 2 hours private or 3 hours in a group. Kite control, safety systems, body dragging.
  • Full Beginner — 14,000 THB: 6 hours private or 9 hours in a group. Board starts and first rides.
  • Independent — 20,000 THB: 10 hours private or 15 hours in a group. Upwind riding and self-rescue, aiming at IKO Level 3.
  • Refresh — 3,500 THB: 2 hours private for riders who learned before.

Children can learn from about 8 years old if they weigh at least 30–35 kg.

Wing Foil: Power in Your Hands

With a wing you hold the power source directly — no lines, no harness — and stand on a board with a hydrofoil that lifts you above the water once you have speed. Letting go of the wing takes all the power away instantly, which many beginners find reassuring. It is also a natural next step for kiters and windsurfers who want to try foiling. Courses lead to IWO certification.

  • Intro — 4,000 THB: 2 hours. Wing handling and first board sessions.
  • Beginner — 11,900 THB: 6 hours (3 × 2 h). Riding with the wing and first foil flights.
  • Advanced — 18,000 THB: 10 hours (5 × 2 h). Longer flights, turns and riding upwind.

Windsurfing: Still a Great First Wind Sport

The sail is fixed to the board, you stand up and steer by moving it. Windsurfing has a gentle start: most people are sailing short distances early on, and it copes well with lighter wind, which makes it a good match for the Nathon season. Lessons follow the IKO windsurfing curriculum.

  • Discovery — 4,000 THB: 2 hours private. Balance, steering and first runs.
  • Beginner — 11,000 THB: 6 hours private. Turning, sailing back upwind, riding on your own.
  • Independent — 14,000 THB for riders who want to go further.
  • Refresh — 3,000 THB: 2 hours private.

E-Foil: Flying on a Calm Day

An e-foil is a board with a hydrofoil and a quiet electric motor, controlled with a handheld remote. It needs no wind and no waves, so it fills the calm days perfectly. Lessons include an instructor, helmet, vest, radio coaching and free phone video; riders must be at least 12 (under-18s with parental consent). Prices follow our partner operator, easyflyfoil.

  • Intro — 2,000 THB: 30 minutes, ideal for a first try.
  • Lesson — 3,500 THB for a first 60-minute lesson, 3,000 THB for repeat lessons.
  • 5 × 30 min package — 8,500 THB.
  • Freedom package — 13,000 THB: 5 hours.
  • Drone video: 1,000 THB, or 2,000 THB with editing.

Kayaking: Explore at Your Own Pace

A kayak needs no lesson and no wind, just calm water and a sense of curiosity. In the Lamai season, a popular trip is paddling south towards the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks at the end of the bay. Kayaks work well for families and for anyone who wants a quiet hour on the sea. Always check the day's conditions with us before heading out.

  • 1 hour — 500 THB
  • 2 hours — 900 THB
  • 3 hours — 1,200 THB

Stand-Up Paddle: The Gentle Option

SUP is the easiest way to get on a board: a wide, stable board and a paddle, and most people are standing within a few minutes. Calm mornings are the best time, before the wind picks up; paddling into a strong breeze is hard work. It is also a quiet workout for balance and core.

  • 1 hour — 400 THB
  • 2 hours — 700 THB
  • All day — 1,000 THB

Choosing by Situation

The forecast shows a windy week: this is kite, wing or windsurf time. Book lessons for the windiest days and keep a spare day in case the wind moves. The sea is flat: try the e-foil for excitement, or take a kayak or SUP for a slow morning. You have never done a water sport: a 2-hour kite Discovery, a windsurf Discovery or a 30-minute e-foil Intro will tell you quickly what you enjoy. You already kite: rent gear if you are independent, or try the wing — the wind knowledge carries over. You are travelling with children: kayak and SUP work for all ages, the e-foil from 12, and kite lessons from around 8 years with a weight of at least 30–35 kg.

People usually ask me which sport to start with. My answer: look at the wind forecast first, then at what excites you. A windy week at Lamai is made for kites and wings; a calm spell is perfect for the e-foil, a kayak or a board and paddle. Either way, you will not spend your holiday sitting on the sand.

FAQ

E-foil, kayak and SUP all work without wind. The e-foil intro costs 2,000 THB for 30 minutes, kayaks start at 500 THB per hour and SUP boards at 400 THB per hour.

At Lamai Beach on the east coast from December to April and at Nathon Beach on the west coast, next to Nathon town and the ferry pier, from May to October.

A 2-hour kitesurfing Discovery (5,000 THB), a 2-hour windsurfing Discovery (4,000 THB) or a 30-minute e-foil Intro (2,000 THB). All are short, include equipment and show you quickly whether you want to continue.

Kayak and SUP suit all ages. The e-foil is from 12 years, with parental consent for under-18s. Kitesurfing has no strict minimum age; children from about 8 can learn if they weigh at least 30–35 kg.

One Day, Three Ways to Get Wet

A good day on Samui often follows the wind rather than the clock. Start early with a SUP or kayak while the sea is at its calmest. When the breeze fills in — mid-morning in a strong Lamai week, often later in the day at Nathon — switch to a kite, wing or windsurf lesson. If the wind never arrives, book an e-foil session instead and still get the feeling of flying over the water.

Because all activities run from the same school, changing plans is simple: one WhatsApp message and we will tell you what makes sense for the conditions that day.

Travelling With a Mixed Group

Friends and families rarely want the same thing. One person may be set on learning to kite, another only wants to paddle, and the kids are counting down to the e-foil. Samui handles that well. While one person is in a kite lesson, others can take a kayak along the coast or try SUP, and everyone can meet up again on the sand afterwards.

If you tell us who is coming — ages, experience and what each person is curious about — we can suggest a plan that keeps everyone busy without long waits on the beach.

Simple Safety Habits for Kayak and SUP

Kayaks and SUP boards are rented without an instructor, so a few habits make all the difference. Tell the team where you plan to go and roughly when you will be back. Stay reasonably close to the shore and head back early if the wind starts to pick up — paddling home against it is much harder than paddling out. Wear sunscreen and a hat, take water, and keep a phone in a waterproof pouch. If you are unsure whether the day is right for a longer trip, ask; we are on the beach every day and know how the conditions are changing.

What a Varied Week Might Cost

As an example, one person spending a week in the Lamai season might book a kite Discovery lesson (5,000 THB), a 30-minute e-foil Intro (2,000 THB), a 2-hour kayak trip (900 THB) and an all-day SUP (1,000 THB) — four very different days on the water for 8,900 THB in total, with all equipment included. Swap in the Full Beginner kite course or a wing foil course if one of the sports grabs you, and keep the no-wind activities for the calm days.

Getting to the Beach

Samui has its own airport (USM), and ferries arrive at Nathon from the mainland and the neighbouring islands. Most visitors stay somewhere between Chaweng, Bophut and Fisherman's Village, Maenam and Lamai, and the island is small enough to drive to the beach we are working from that season. Ask us for directions when you book.

Kite Club on Two Islands

Kite Club also runs a school on the neighbouring island — Kite Club Koh Phangan. If your trip includes both islands, let us know your dates and we will help you plan where to ride.
