Koh Samui has two kite seasons. Knowing which one suits you — and exactly when to arrive — is the difference between an epic trip and a frustrating one.

Two Kite Seasons Explained

Koh Samui has two kite seasons per year, and our school moves with them. The island sits in the Gulf of Thailand and gets both the northeast monsoon and the southwest monsoon — so we ride on the east coast for one and on the west coast for the other. All services (kite, wing foil, windsurf, e-foil, kayak, SUP, rental, storage) move with the season.

The NE monsoon season (December–April) is ridden at Lamai Beach on the east coast. Wind is typically 12–20 knots from the northeast, most consistent and strongest from January to March; in April it turns more easterly. This is the main season and the best time for beginners.

The SW monsoon season (May–October) is ridden at Nathon Beach on the west coast, next to Nathon town and the main ferry pier. Wind is typically 10–18 knots from the southwest and more variable than the Lamai season; afternoons are usually best. It is perfectly rideable for intermediate and advanced riders who can adapt kite sizes quickly. For beginners, it works but requires more patience around sessions.

Between the two seasons, October–November is a transition with lighter, variable wind. Koh Samui's rainy season is roughly October–December, with November the wettest month — the opposite of most of Thailand. On no-wind days we run e-foil, kayak and SUP.

NE Monsoon at Lamai (Dec–Apr): Best for Beginners

The NE monsoon season at Lamai Beach is the most reliable time of year on Koh Samui for beginner instruction. Here is why:

The Spot: Lamai Beach

Lamai is a long sandy beach of about 4 km on Koh Samui's east coast, with the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks at its south end and Lamai village, restaurants and accommodation for every budget close by. It is about 30 minutes by car from Samui Airport. The NE monsoon blows onto this coast from December, and the water is 27–30 °C, so no wetsuit is needed.

Typical Daily Pattern

Wind strength and timing change from day to day. Your instructor checks the forecast and schedules each lesson for the most reliable window of the day, and chooses kite size to match the conditions.

December and April: The Shoulders

December starts the Lamai season while the rainy season is still ending, so expect some showers. April is still at Lamai, but the wind turns more easterly and is often a little lighter than January–March. Both are good months if you stay flexible and check the forecast with us before booking flights.

January to March: Peak Season Reality

Peak season is genuinely excellent — but come prepared. January to March brings the most consistent NE wind at Lamai, and it is also a busy time on Koh Samui: accommodation fills quickly and lesson slots fill faster. Book at least 3 weeks ahead. For families or groups wanting specific dates, book 6–8 weeks out.

SW Monsoon at Nathon (May–October)

From May to October the school runs at Nathon Beach on the west coast, next to Nathon — the island's administrative town with the main ferry pier — about 40 minutes by car from Samui Airport and 30–40 minutes from Lamai. The southwest monsoon is more variable and less consistent day-to-day than the Lamai season, typically 10–18 knots, with afternoons usually best. In practice there will be good kite days and some days with too little wind. For an intermediate or advanced rider, this is not a problem — you adapt. For a beginner trying to get 6 hours of instruction in a 7-day window, it can mean one or two cancelled sessions.

Tropical showers and squalls can happen in any season. Rain is not a problem for kitesurfing — you are already wet. Electrical storms are — and we pause or cancel sessions any time there is thunder or lightning anywhere in visible range. This is non-negotiable safety practice. If you can choose, the Lamai season (especially January–March) is more reliable for beginners; the Nathon season suits riders who can adapt to changing conditions.

Wing Foiling in the SW Season

Wing foiling has lower minimum wind requirements than kitesurfing — you can ride usefully in 12–14 knots, whereas a beginner kiter needs a minimum of 15–16 knots to learn effectively. This makes the SW season better for wing foil lessons than for kitesurf lessons. Many visitors who come for the SW season combine wing foil lessons with e-foil sessions on the windless days.

Transition Months (Oct–Nov): What to Do When Wind is Off

October and November are the lightest, most variable wind months on Koh Samui, and they fall in the rainy season (roughly October–December, November wettest). Kite lessons run only when the wind allows. What we run on no-wind days:

• E-foil sessions — no wind required, available every day. 30-minute intro sessions from 2,000 THB. One of the best ways to spend a flat-water day.
• SUP rental — calm days are ideal for paddleboarding, and the island's coastline is beautiful from the water.
• Kayak rental — the coast is excellent for kayaking in calm conditions. We offer 1h, 2h, and 3h rental.
• Kite equipment rental and review — riders with their own gear can use any wind that appears. Transition days can still produce rideable windows for experienced riders on big kites.

In December the NE monsoon returns and the school moves back to Lamai Beach for the new season.

The most useful forecast tools for Koh Samui:

The go-to for most kiters globally. Use the ECMWF model for Koh Samui — it is more accurate than GFS for the Gulf of Thailand. Set your location to Koh Samui and look at wind speed at 10 metres. iKitesurf / Windguru

Windguru and iKitesurf are useful for trend and timing on Koh Samui. Compare several models and look at the trend over a few days rather than a single number.

Booking Strategy: When to Book for Each Season

For the Lamai season (Dec–Apr): Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead. For January–March, 6–8 weeks is safer, as this is the most popular time on the island.

For the Nathon season (May–Oct): Flexible booking is easier — 1–2 weeks ahead is usually sufficient. We recommend booking accommodation first (some good guesthouses near the beach fill up), then lessons once you are confirmed for dates.

Flexible travel tip: If you can shift your arrival by 1–2 weeks either direction, always ask us what the forecast looks like before committing to flights. A short WhatsApp message can save you from arriving during a flat-wind week. We give honest answers, even if it means telling you to delay your trip.

Multiple days or full courses: The Beginner Course (14,000 THB / 6 hours) and Independent Course (20,000 THB / 10 hours) are spread across multiple days. This is why season choice matters — if you book a 5-day Independent Course in early November, there is a real chance you will hit dead wind days. In the January–March peak at Lamai, you can usually complete a multi-day course with few or no wind cancellations.
