Which Season is Right For You?
Complete Beginners
The NE monsoon at Lamai is the most consistent wind of the year, especially January–March. Steady wind makes learning safer and faster, and multi-day courses are easiest to complete.
Advanced Riders
The SW monsoon at Nathon is more variable, typically 10–18 kts. Good for riders who adapt kite size quickly; lighter days suit big kites, wing foil and foil training.
Intermediate
Intermediate riders benefit from both seasons: Lamai (Dec–Apr) to consolidate upwind riding and gybes in steady wind, Nathon (May–Oct) to progress in more variable conditions.
Why Koh Samui for Kitesurfing?
Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand and gets both the NE monsoon and the SW monsoon. Because our school moves between two coasts, that means two usable seasons per year.
From December to April we ride at Lamai Beach on the east coast, about 30 minutes by car from Samui Airport. From May to October we move to Nathon Beach on the west coast, next to the main ferry pier. All services — lessons, rental, storage, e-foil, kayak and SUP — move with the season.
The water temperature stays between 27–30°C year-round, so no wetsuit is needed at any time of year. That alone makes it one of the most comfortable kite spots in the world.
How to Plan Your Kite Trip
For a first-time learner, aim for January–March at Lamai Beach. Wind is most consistent during these months, and you'll have the best chance of completing all lesson days without wind cancellations.
We recommend planning a minimum of 7 days on the island to complete the Full Beginner Course (3 days of lessons) with buffer days for low-wind days. For the Independent Rider Course (5 days of lessons), plan 10–12 days.
All lessons are rescheduled at no charge if the wind is not suitable for safe learning on your booked day. We monitor the forecast daily and contact you the evening before each lesson.
Wind Season FAQ
December to April is the primary season, at Lamai Beach on the east coast. January to March offers the most consistent NE monsoon wind, typically 12–20 knots. December and April are good shoulder months; in April the wind turns more easterly and is often a little lighter.
There are two usable seasons: the NE monsoon at Lamai Beach (December–April) and the SW monsoon at Nathon Beach (May–October). October–November is a transition with lighter, variable wind, during Koh Samui's rainy season (roughly October–December). On no-wind days we run e-foil, kayak and SUP.
Lamai season (December–April): typically 12–20 knots, most consistent January–March. Nathon season (May–October): typically 10–18 knots, more variable, afternoons usually best. Transition (October–November): lighter, variable wind — lessons only when conditions allow.
We monitor the forecast daily and will reschedule your lesson to the next suitable day at no extra charge. If you're on a short trip and wind doesn't cooperate, we can suggest wing foil or e-foil as alternative water experiences. Extended windless periods are least likely January–March at Lamai.

for Kitesurfing?
Koh Samui lies in the Gulf of Thailand, Surat Thani Province. Our winter spot, Lamai Beach (approx. 9.47°N, 100.05°E), gets the NE monsoon from December to April; our summer spot, Nathon Beach (approx. 9.53°N, 99.93°E), gets the SW monsoon from May to October. Water is 27–30 °C all year, and Samui International Airport has direct flights from Bangkok.
