Safety Guide

Safety

Kitesurfing is safe when you respect three things: the wind, the equipment and the people around you. Most accidents happen on the beach, not on the water, and almost all of them are avoidable. This is the safety framework we teach on Koh Samui — including the local details you will not find in a generic guide.

Know Your Safety Systems

Every modern kite has several independent ways to take the power out. You learn all of them in the first lesson and practise them until they are automatic:

  • Let go of the bar — the kite depowers by itself. The first and most important reflex.
  • Quick release (chicken loop) — push away the release to disconnect from the harness loop; the kite flags out on one line.
  • Safety leash release — the last resort, which disconnects you from the kite completely.
  • Helmet and impact vest — standard for every student at Kite Club; our helmets also carry the radio for coaching.

Wind Direction: The One Rule That Matters Most

Never ride in offshore wind — wind blowing from the land out to sea — unless there is dedicated boat support. We do not teach in offshore conditions, full stop. Cross-shore and cross-onshore wind are what we use for lessons, because if anything goes wrong you drift back towards the beach.

SpotSeasonWind we use
Nahai Beach, south-east coastDecember – AprilNE in Dec–Jan, turning E–SE from February, 12–20 kts
Nathon Beach, west coastMay – OctoberSW monsoon, 10–18 kts, more variable

Local Hazards on Koh Samui

  • Nahai — the water is shallow and flat, which is great for learning, but it also means you must never jump or fall head-first in the shallows. Watch for fishing boats and moorings towards Hua Thanon.
  • Nathon — the ferry pier and boat traffic are nearby. We keep lessons well away from the pier and the channel, and set a clear riding zone every day.
  • Rain squalls — from October to December a dark cloud line brings a sudden gust front and then a lull. We come off the water before it arrives.
  • Sun — tropical UV is strong all year. Long-sleeve rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water.
Local Insight

Safety at Kite Club comes from instructor supervision, radio helmet coaching and beach support — not from a boat. That is exactly why we only teach in onshore-side wind and in a defined zone close to the beach.

Beach Etiquette and Right of Way

  • Launch and land with a helper, never alone, and keep 50 m of clear space downwind of your kite on the beach.
  • A kite parked on the beach is secured with sand on the leading edge — and never left with lines attached across the beach.
  • On the water, the rider with the wind coming from the right (starboard tack) has right of way; the rider going upwind keeps the kite high, the rider going downwind keeps it low.
  • Surfers, swimmers and SUP paddlers always have priority.

Who Can Learn

There is no strict age limit. What matters is a body weight of at least about 30–35 kg, basic swimming ability and following instructions. Children from around 8 years old learn with us regularly. See our kitesurfing courses — the Discovery lesson (5,000 THB, 2 hours private) covers all the fundamental safety skills.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is kitesurfing safe for beginners?

Yes, when you learn with certified instructors, in the right wind direction and with a helmet and impact vest. The first lesson is spent almost entirely on safety systems and kite control.

Do you have a rescue boat?

No. Our safety is based on instructor supervision, radio helmets, beach support and choosing onshore-side wind in a defined riding zone close to the beach.

What is the minimum age for kitesurfing?

There is no strict minimum age. The key requirement is a body weight of roughly 30–35 kg; children from about 8 years old can learn.

What happens if the weather turns during a lesson?

The instructor watches the sky and the forecast and ends the session before a squall arrives. The lesson time is made up on another day.
