Kite Mistakes

Beginner

Almost every kitesurfing beginner makes the same mistakes — and that is good news, because the fixes are well known. Knowing them before your first lesson saves time and bruises.

The List

  • 1. Too big a kite — more power is not faster learning. Let the instructor choose a size that keeps you in control.
  • 2. Big bar movements — small inputs steer the kite; big ones send it crashing. Steer, then level the bar.
  • 3. Pulling the bar in when scared — sheeting in adds power. When in doubt, push the bar away or let go.
  • 4. Looking at the kite all the time — glance up, then look where you are going.
  • 5. Standing up with your legs on the water start — let the kite pull you up.
  • 6. Board pointing upwind at the start — start slightly downwind to build speed.
  • 7. Straight legs — soft knees absorb chop and keep the edge.
  • 8. Forgetting the edge — no edge means drifting downwind.
  • 9. Skipping body drag practice — board recovery is what lets you ride without help.
  • 10. Riding tired — most crashes happen at the end of long sessions. Stop while it is still going well.
Expert Tip

Pick one fix per session. Trying to correct everything at once usually means correcting nothing.

How to Fix Them Faster

Instant feedback is what shortens the learning curve. At Kite Club we coach through radio helmets, so you hear the correction while you are riding, not after the run. Shallow, flat water at Nahai Beach (December–April) also means every restart is quick.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common kitesurfing beginner mistake?

Using too much power — a kite that is too big or sheeting in when nervous. Less power means more control and faster learning.

Why do I keep crashing the kite?

Usually bar movements are too big. Steer with small inputs and level the bar once the kite turns.

Why do I drift downwind?

Not enough edge and the kite too high. Dig in the heel-side rail and keep the kite lower.

How can I learn faster?

Take lessons with instant feedback, practise one fix at a time and stop before you are exhausted.
