Wing Foil

Riding downwind on a wing foil feels completely different from reaching across the wind. The wing goes quiet, the foil takes over, and you start to use the energy of the water. It is one of the most rewarding skills in the sport — and one that needs planning.

Why Downwind Feels Different

As you turn downwind and speed up, the wind you feel (the apparent wind) drops. The wing loses power, so you rely more on pumping and on the push of small swells and wind chop to keep flying.

Technique

  • Bear away with speed — do not turn downwind from a slow, stalled flight.
  • Let the wing go light and neutral above your head or slightly forward; use it for short bursts of power only.
  • Pump with your legs to link one bump to the next, then glide.
  • Keep your weight centred over the foil and look ahead for the next bump.

Planning a Downwinder

  • Never go alone — ride with a buddy.
  • Plan the pickup — know exactly where you finish and how you get back.
  • Check the whole route — reefs, boats, piers, harbour entrances and the forecast for the full session.
  • Tell someone — who you are with, where you start and when you expect to finish.
Local Insight

There is no rescue boat at Kite Club — our safety is instructor supervision and beach support in a set riding zone. Downwind runs outside that zone are for experienced, self-sufficient riders with their own plan and buddy.

How to Build Up to It

  • First master riding upwind on both tacks and jibing on the foil.
  • Practise short downwind legs inside your normal riding area.
  • Try a bigger, more efficient foil — it glides better between bumps.
  • Only then plan a longer run with a buddy and a pickup.

On Koh Samui

Our lessons and rentals run from Nahai Beach (December–April) and Nathon Beach (May–October) within a supervised riding area. Downwind skills — linking bumps, bearing away with speed — can be practised on short legs there. Ask in our IWO wing foil lessons for coaching on this stage.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is downwind wing foiling hard?

It needs solid basics: riding upwind on both tacks and foiling jibes. After that, the main skills are pumping and linking bumps.

Why does my wing lose power going downwind?

Your speed reduces the apparent wind. Keep the wing light and neutral and use pumping and swell to keep flying.

Can I do downwinders on Koh Samui?

Only as an experienced rider with a buddy and a planned pickup. Kite Club lessons run inside a supervised riding area and we have no rescue boat.

What foil is best for downwind?

A larger, efficient front wing that glides well at lower speed.
