Why January is Perfect for Beginners

The NE monsoon is established on the east coast by January. 12–20 knots is a very good range for beginners — enough power to ride, not too much to control.

From December to April the school runs at Lamai Beach, a long sandy beach of about 4 km on the east coast, with Lamai village, restaurants and accommodation for every budget close by.

The sea around Koh Samui stays at 27–30 °C all year, so no wetsuit is needed. You can spend the whole lesson in the water in boardshorts or a rash guard.

January Questions

January is one of the best months to learn kitesurfing on Koh Samui. It starts the January–March peak of the Lamai Beach season, with the NE monsoon typically at 12–20 knots — consistent enough to ride, manageable for beginners.

From December to April all our lessons, rentals and water activities run at Lamai Beach on the east coast, where the NE monsoon blows. Lamai is about 30 minutes by car from Samui Airport. From May to October we move to Nathon Beach on the west coast for the SW monsoon.

December–March: NE monsoon at Lamai Beach, typically 12–20 kts, most consistent January–March. April: wind turns more easterly, still at Lamai. May–October: SW monsoon at Nathon Beach, typically 10–18 kts and more variable. October–November: transition with lighter, variable wind.

January is warm with air temperatures around 28–30°C and water at 27–30°C. Koh Samui's rainy season runs roughly October–December, so early January can still bring some showers, but it gets drier through the month. The NE monsoon keeps the air fresh.
