Kitesurfing

A kite foil lifts the board out of the water on an underwater wing. The result: silent, smooth riding in wind that would keep a twin-tip on the beach. It is also a new skill, even for experienced kiters.

When Are You Ready?

  • You ride a twin-tip independently in both directions.
  • You stay upwind and relaunch the kite without help.
  • You can fly the kite with one hand and without looking at it.

How the First Sessions Go

  • Board handling — body drag with the foil board and get your feet on it in the water.
  • Surface riding — ride with the foil in the water, board touching the surface, weight on the front foot.
  • First lift — shift weight back slightly; the board rises. Short flights and gentle touchdowns are the goal.
  • Height control — small front-foot and back-foot adjustments keep a steady height.

Kite Size and Wind

A foil needs much less power than a twin-tip. As a rule of thumb, kite size ≈ weight (kg) ÷ wind (knots) × 1.4 — our kite size calculator has a hydrofoil option. Too much power is the most common beginner problem on a foil.

Safety

  • Helmet and impact vest — the foil is hard and has edges.
  • Deep enough water for the mast.
  • Fall away from the foil and keep it downwind of you while you recover.
  • Plenty of space from other riders and swimmers.
Expert Tip

Start with a big, slow front wing and a short mast if possible. Speed and height come later; the first sessions are about staying calm and making small corrections.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is kite foiling hard to learn?

For an independent twin-tip rider, first flights usually come within a few sessions. Foil balance is new, but kite skills transfer.

How much wind do I need to kite foil?

Much less than a twin-tip — foilers often ride in light wind that keeps twin-tips on the beach.

What size kite for foiling?

Smaller than for a twin-tip: about weight ÷ wind × 1.4. A 75 kg rider in 15 knots rides about a 7 m kite on a foil.

How much is a hydrofoil lesson on Koh Samui?

5,000 THB for 1 hour private at Kite Club.
